TAR HEEL GARDNER By John H. Harris. Too many of our home and church grounds are sad looking sights. Instead of being an inspira tion, some of them, I fear, are ac tually depressing. Whether we realize it or not, we all respond to the environment around us. It either gives us a lift, inspires us to greater achievements, or it depress es us and deadens our incentive to obtain nobleness. I like the way Prof. M. E. Gard ner put it. He said: “Nothing adds more dignity and contentment to the art of living than attractive surroundings. A well landscaped 1 although simple, is an out expression of neighborliness and confident living,” The requirements for attractive home or church grounds are simple—as a matter of fact, simpli city is the key. to beauty. Putting it simply, what we need is a well kept lawn; trees for shade and at mosphere; convenient and well maintained drives and walks; shrubs and trees for screening off unattractive views and a few to go around the house; and most of all, we need an appreciation of and a desire for beauty. To help you do the job, we have bulletins available either through, your county or home agent's office ol» through the State Agricultural Extension Service office at State College.
